It's back! - The all new Toyota Supra
No, this is not a drill! It's official, the Toyota Supra is finally back. Okay, let's get this out of the way. No, it's not the road car, but it does confirm that this new wonderful nugget of goodness is called a Supra after months of speculation (we all knew deep down it was, let's face it). We were of course very excited to hear this announcement, so much so one of our editors, Bentley Perkins let out a little wee. Toyota revealed the Supra GR concept at Geneva, to the delight of many eagerly awaiting fans.
So what do you need to know? Well, it's back to the basics - rear wheel drive, engine at the front and it's light, very light! Created by Toyota Gazoo Racing, the concept perfectly expresses the ‘fun to drive’ quality. The large ‘90’ race number on its doors is a historical reference to Supra’s codename and a big visual clue to the fact that this concept heralds Supra’s return in a fifth generation.
The racing concept has a dramatic bodywork design that includes a large rear wing. It makes extensive use of strong but lightweight composite material for elements such as the wide front and rear bumpers, front splitter, rear diffuser, side skirts, door mirror housings and the rear wing. The hood is crafted from the same composite and features aggressive looking air inlets. The windscreen and side windows are made of weight-saving plastic.
The concept’s chassis features lowered front and rear suspension using original equipment components. BBS racing wheels with a centre-nut attachment are fitted with Michelin racing tyres. The braking system uses Brembo Racing calipers and discs, and there is a racing exhaust.
Sure, that's all well and good but it's not the road car. However, if you strip away the wide arches, gaping wing and huge front splitter you can start to imagine the body of what we'll hopefully all get to see in the near future. What surprises me the most is just how much of the MK IV is in this next generation version. All we can say is that we are very excited for future announcements from Toyota (please don't make us wait too long...)
